A Thousand Minarets Β· Chapter Five
Islamic Cairo: The Living Medieval City
Step through Bab Zuweila’s ancient gate into a thousand years of continuous life β merchants, minarets, and stories on every stone.
The Story
A Street Where a Thousand Years Never Stopped Walking
Al-Mu’izz Street is not a museum β it is alive, as it has been for a millennium. Sultans built their monuments here shoulder to shoulder; craftsmen still hammer copper in the same alleys; and the call to prayer rises from stones that heard it first a thousand years ago. We’ll pass through the great gate, into palaces and courtyard houses, and finish in Khan El Khalili β perhaps with mint tea at Al-Fishawi, where the mirrors have watched customers for over two centuries.
