City of the Sun Β· Chapter Four
Heliopolis: The Belle Γpoque Dream
A Belgian baron’s desert fantasy β Hindu palaces, arcaded streets, and cafΓ© tables where Cairo’s golden age never ended.
The Story
The Baron Dreamed a City, and the Desert Obeyed
In 1905, Baron Empain looked at empty sand and saw boulevards. What rose was Heliopolis β the City of the Sun β with its impossible Hindu palace, its basilica, and the arcaded elegance of Korba, where Cairo once sipped coffee in its Sunday best. This is a gentler kind of history: strollable, romantic, and delicious. We’ll wander it street by arcaded street, ending with cake where Egypt’s high society once took theirs β at Groppi.
